Agave ovatifolia - 3 Gallon

Q03-36 — Zone 7 to 10Mexico

Whale's Tongue!! Lynn Lowery first collected this plant in the late eighties. It quickly became a favorite amongst those who saw it but it offset seldom or not at all so has always been rare and in high demand. Lynn found it on the Sierra Lampazos mountains in Northeastern Mexico and or many years it was simply known as Agave sp. Sierra Lampazos. Recently botanist from Mexico and Arizona have named it Agave ovatifolia. A generally non-offsetting plant that looks like a giant A. parryi with very wide leaves.

Notes and observations about this plant

Agave ovatifolia - 3 Gallon by Kevin Tallon
Up-date to my last post. I am so glad that I did not remove this plant and replace it with something else. It has come back from the winter and done remarkable. It has handled our wet spring like a champ and looks awesome. It has grown far faster than I expected probably doubling in size this summer. I will provide protection this winter by wrapping in burlap. For those that may consider this plant out east, I put it in soil that was part topsoil, gravel and sand and then put plastic down under my rocks out to about 3ft to ensure that is would not get totally saturated around the base of the plant. Took cold wet winter hard by Kevin Tallon
Bought this plant late last summer based on the comments above, however it did not fare well in Va Beach, VA over the winter. Plant survived even with one period of 18" of snow, but it has taken a lot of damage, burnt and graying leaves. My soil is well draining, believe that it would have done better with some protection from the winds (Posted on 2/28/11)
Agave ovatifolia by Randi
One very hardy, resilient and beautiful plant. Fared better than A. parryii truncata during our extreme lows. No damage, planted completely in the open, at minus 6.5 degrees! A. parryii suffered, this one did not. Ovatifolia is A beautiful Agave, but does need room.
