Agave x 'Royal Spine'
Royal Spine or Royal Pain!
This plant is said to be a hybrid between Agave macroacantha and Agave victorae-reginae 'compacta' and exhibits the best qualities of both parents. It has a clean form and compact habit with thick, slender, olive-green leaves which have dark-black leaf margins free of biting teeth. The leaves terminate with a sharp, dark-black spine. Though uncomfortable to touch, these spines add a bit of visual character that make this plant such a winner. With the olive-green and black leaf color combination and simple, clean lines this plant will be a container classic for sure. Allen Repashy of Bonsal, CA introduced this fine hybrid Agave to tissue culture. For a chuckle click on this link to read about how Allen originally obtained this plant. It is a entertaining story and worth the read. Thanks to Allen for providing the photo!
