Albuca spiralis

Y11-67 — Zone 9 to 10South Africa

Corkscrew Albuca! This albuca gives an interesting show even when it is not in flower. During the winter months when this little gem is actively growing its foliage corkscrews and twists in a most fascinating manner. Given ample sunlight a mature planting is a riot of twisting and spiraling foliage resembling a green, curly hair-do. In spring the bulbs are topped buy numerous yellow-green flowers that lend a unique green-glow to the early season garden. After flowering and seed production is complete the bulb goes to sleep for the summer but reliably returns in the fall to invigorate the winter landscape.

Tips. This plant need good drainage. We grow this species in shallow bulb pans which we leave in the garden year round. We place a gravel mulch on the top of the soil, so when the bulbs are dormant the pot remains interesting to view. In the winter the pots are left outside because the spirally foliage is reliably hardy into the low 20s. A great plant for the southern rock garden as well.
