Allium canadensis var. hyacinthoides
Evergreen Wild onion! Pat McNeal of McNeal Growers in Manchaca, TX generously shared this great form of Allium canadensis with us, which he originally got from Scott Ogden. I must admit I greatly admire our native Texas onions and I am always eager to try different forms. This interesting plant performs like many varieties of A. canadensis, producing an abundance of showy white flowers. However this plant is distinguished from other varieties of this species in that the foliage is evergreen, where most varieties loose their foliage and go dormant as the heat of summer arrives. Whether it is grown primarily for the large showy white flowers in the spring or for the silver-gray foliage this selection is worthy of admiration.
