Allium canadensis var texensis
Texas Onion! Allium canadensis has many varieties and forms and the identification and nomenclature of the different varieties is fairly murky. Dr. Thad Howard gave us this particular form with the name Allium texensis. Other knowledgeable people have stated that it is a form of Allium canadensis, so we will compromise and offer it as Allium canadensis var texensis. The plant is summer dormant but reliability awakens in the fall producing luscious blue-green foliage all winter. In mid spring flower spikes emerge and rise above the foliage producing sizable flower heads composed of numerous clean-white, starry-shaped flowers. This form reproduces either by underground offsets or seed but is well managed in the garden.
