Asparagus africanus
Y07-83 — Zone 7b to 10— South Africa
I gained enormous respect for the genus Asparagus when we traveled to South Africa in 2005. I had not realized there was such variety in shape and form as we saw in the numerous species we encountered. With giant shrub-like plants the size of compact cars; small, rigid, colony-forming plants; soft clambering vines and various other forms I was truly smitten. Asparagus africanus develops a dense mounding habit to 3'h x 4'w, composed of numerous erect stems covered with small fir-like leaves. Happy plants are so dense you can't see the ground beneath them. A very fine plant indeed.

- the common name is misleading; it is not a fern, it's a monocot (Posted on 5/16/10)
