Bauhinia galpinii
Y03-31 — Zone 8b to 10— South Africa, Natal
Orange orchid tree!
This African orchid-tree has large coral-orange flowers, which are produced in such abundance that they completely cover this broad-spreading shrub from mid-summer until frost. The size and color of the flowers are similar to some color strains of Bougainvillea, often tricking those who don't observe the form closely enough into thinking it is indeed a Bougainvillea.
Here in zone 8b the plant grows to 4' tall by 8' across but can become a large mounding shrub, to 12' tall, in frost free zones. This species prefers neutral to acid soils and often become chlorotic in over water alkaline soils.
