Agarita!
This highly ornamental shrub has twisted, prickly, green to blue-green foliage mottled in silver; and as the name implies, the leaves are arranged in threes. Agarita's butter-yellow blooms suddenly appear in late winter and announce spring with a wonderful penetrating sweet aroma. They are produced in great abundance along the arching cane-like branches. Small plum-red fruits quickly follow which are coveted by humans and adored by birds. As a child I remember carefully gathering the fruit between the prickly leaves to later be rewarded with the best tasting jam. The mounding form makes it an excellent plant for bird life and habitat.
