Caesalpinia paraguariensis

D26-25 — Zone 8b to 10Northwestern Argentina

The Caesalpinias that normally grow in frosty climates are usually herbaceous perennials or shrubs. We normally do not think of them as trees but Caesalpinia paraguariensis is one of the few species that can attain tree status in zone 8. This great plant has a multitude of fine qualities. The soft, ferny foliage emerges a reddish-burgundy but ages to light green and gives the tree an overall soft, pleasant texture. The tree grows to a moderate size with a nice rounded shape, blooming in the spring and summer with clusters of yellow flowers. The tree's bark is smooth and exfoliates in a patchwork fashion, exposing light green, beige, grey and brown patches which together create a kaleidoscope of wonder. The lumber is known to be very strong and is highly sought after for its aesthetic qualities, though if I were to grow this fine tree to a mature size, I would hate to have to cut it down.

Planting tip by Yucca Do Staff
This being a sub-tropical plant by nature it is recommended to plant it in the ground in the spring, after all danger of frost, to allow the plant to become fully established before it first winter (Posted on 2/24/10)
