Carex tetrastachya
Y11-90 — Zone 7 to 9— Texas
Four-angled Sedge! And Best Supporting Texture Plant for the woodland garden goes to... (drum roll please)... Carex tetrastachya. This evergreen exhibits clustering rosettes that are classically elegant. They add a soft, comforting texture and color to the shady garden. The tufting rosettes, with thin arching, string like foliage, combines well with larger, bold textured perennials and woody plants without aggressively trying to take over and dominate the garden like some Liriopes can.

Notes and observations about this plant
- Great under stress by Wade Roitsch
- I barely noticed this fine native in my shady garden the first year while living in Giddings. I was busily introducing other plants to the garden and did not give it much thought. When the harsh droughty conditions, which seem to be dominating at the moment, took their toll on many of the garden introductions, this stalwart looked great under the less than ideal conditions. I could not help but take notice. Since then I have been encouraging its spread and allowing it to have a greater role in my garden. (Posted on 1/12/11)
