Ceratozamia latifolia

Y03-91 — Zone 8a to 10northeastern Mexico

Looks like a palm! Surprisingly, Ceratozamia latifolia is not very well represented in collections of exotic plants along the Gulf Coast. Its small size, cold hardiness and exotic appeal are all admirable traits that make it worthy of greater usage. New leaves which are visually similar to some ferns are flushed in late summer. These new leaves are a bronze to chocolate-brown color and contrast sharply with the lush greens of mature leaves. Though the bronzy color of the new foliage is believed to be a method of camouflaging the tender growth from would-be predators, like plant eating dinosaurs, they are beautifully exciting to the human eye. An honorable plant whose colorful foliage and fine form combined certainly lend a sophisticated element to any woodland garden.

Best suited to shady woodland conditions where their long-lived leaves don’t get burned in the hot sun. Tolerant of any soil as long as it is well drained and enriched with organic material. (Posted on 3/5/10)
