Cylindropuntia imbricata
Robust Cane Cholla! Often chollas do not prosper in overly humid environments. They are better adapted to the arid west. This plant however has proven to be humidity tolerant and garden worthy (given you have a big enough garden). The 1-1/2" to 2" cylindrical stems grow upwards and branch with profusion eventually developing into a mounding shrub-like plant 8' to 10' tall and 12' wide. In mid-summer rich, wine-purple flowers are produce in profusion. This selected clone from Pat McNeal tends to have longer stem segments giving the plant a larger profile overall. The flowers also tend to flare open more broadly than most clones that I have seen making the floral display more spectacular.
