Denmoza rhodacantha
Q01-19 — Zone 8a to 10— Western, Argentina
Anagram cactus! The genus Denmoza is an anagram of Mendoza, Argentina, from where the original specimens were collected. It is a short, solitary columnar cactus, with older plants having numerous spines but younger plants much fewer. The spines on young plants are rusty-red to orange in color, aging to grey with time. Old specimens have a multi-colored effect, with the upper 1/3 of plants being rusty-red while the lower 1/3 is nearly gray, and the middle 1/3 somewhere in transition. Flowers occur with age and are tubular and scarlet.
