Dioon edule -- Jacala form

Dioon is a genera of cycad similar in appearance and form to the Cycas of Asia but are native to Mexico. The Dioon edule complex occurs in a range of conditions from fairly wet to moderately dry regions in Northeastern Mexico. Leaf shape and color, the size of the fruiting cone and overall plant size, varies depending on the variety. The 'Jacala' form grows in the edges of open woodlands where it receives some shade.

After years of growing the different forms of this plant, we have observed that the new leaves of this variety flush a light burgundy color.
