Echinocereus pentalophus
Forma procumbens or leonensis! The stems of Echinocereus pentalophus are generally 4 to 5 sided and can vary in diameter from 1/2 to 2 inches. The form we are offering has the thin narrow stems and may be the form often listed as ssp. procumbens or ssp. leonensis. In habitat this plant tends to recline and spread on the ground making colonies that can spread to 3 or more feet around. This reclining habit makes this plant an excellent candidate for pots and hanging baskets, where growing in the ground is unadvisable. Small clusters of spine are distributed evenly along the angles of the stems and though uncomfortable to handle are not vicious or overly dangerous. The stunningly beautiful flowers of this species occur as an explosion of vibrancy and typically occur in the spring. The flowers open to form a wide disk up to 4" in diameter, with the outer half to two-thirds of the floral disk being pink to magenta surrouning a white throat.
