Echinocereus triglochidiatus

Claret-cup cactus! This claret-cup cactus was found growing in the mountains around Alpine, TX on rocky slopes amongst giant granite boulders. It grows in full-sun or in dry bright-shade beneath Quercus and Acacia. A mounding cactus producing numerous ovoid to cylindrical stems. The stems can have few or no spines or have numerous short, black or white spines. Orange-red flowers with white throats are produced below the stem tips and occur in late spring or early summer.
