Erythrina cristi-galli - Praia do Gravata, Santa Catarina, Brazil
D29-59 — Zone 9a to 10— Santa Catarina, Brazil
Cockspur Coral Tree! In the costal regions of Southern Brazil to Argentina, Erythrina cristi-galli grows into a large shrub as apposed to the inland forms which tend to be more tree-like. The branches of this terrific form are cane-like and arch out and away from the central stem, giving the plant a mound like shape. Dark-red flowers appear periodically through much of the summer in large clusters at the end of the arching stems. In near frost-free areas this plant can bloom off and on throughout the growing season. In the northern extremes the blooming periods may be restricted to one or two blooming flushes.
