Erythrina herbacea var. arborea
T81-20 — Zone 9 to 10— Texas and Mexico
Tree coralbean! The southern populations of this coralbean have been subjected to less frost over time leading to a woody, more shrub-like form. This variety grows upright with woody stems from 8' to 10' in mild, frost-free climates. It is root hardy to zone 8 but blooms mainly on old wood, so it needs a zone 9b climate or warmer, (or protection from frost in marginal areas) to bloom. It prefers full sun but can be planted in high, bright shade to give a bit of frost protection in marginal climates.
