Eustoma exaltatum spp. russelianum
Texas Bluebell!
The plants we have have not developed as rapidly as anticipated and at the moment are not shippable. Hopefully the plants will be ready in late February. Please check back for availability.
2012 was a terribly dry year in Texas. There was barely enough moisture in the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011 to have a spring wildflower show in our part of Texas. The summer conditions were even worse, with little or no summer color on the roadsides, unless you consider brown to be "color". The one remarkable exception was our Texas Bluebells. Established plants bloomed in profusion, while everything around them was brown. The vibrant blue, poppy like flowers occur in midsummer on 36" to 48", upright, branching stems.
Tips: Do not overly improve the soil in your garden for this plant. In too rich a soil, the plant is likely to grow too lushly getting too top heavy and prone to falling over. Eustomas like heavy clay or caliche soils, and do not like loose sandy soil. Fall and winter is the recommended time for planting this plant, so it can develop an extensive root system, and be able to withstand the harsher conditions of summer.
