Ferocactus latispinus
Q01-37 — Zone 9a to 10— Mexico
Devil's Tongue Barrel! This small bodied Ferocactus is one of my favorites. I have several plants in my collection and I am always finding myself, adding more. The small compact body is remarkably similar to a Texas Horse Crippler but the spines brandished by this plant are broader and flatter. The spines vary in color from amber, red to ashen-gray. The flowers are typically a rich-purple and produced sporadically throughout the spring and warm summer months. It is stunning in containers or the well, drained xeric garden.

Notes and observations about this plant
- Gainesville Happy by Michael Patterson
- I have been growing this cactus for four years in a small pot under the eave of a South-facing wall, in Gainesville, Florida (USDA zone 8b). It spent last winter outdoors, and survived five nights of temps in the teens, unharmed. (Posted on 1/29/11)
