Townsend's Barrel! A robust growing barrel cactus with a blue-green body and striking bright red emerging spines which in time are crowned with starry translucent straw-yellow flowers with rusty orange centers and mid-ribbing. This west coast barrel has surprised us in that it was completely happy growing in our relatively cold and wet, upper Gulf coast winters. During the 6 years that it grew unprotected at the base of a Yucca rostrata, 10 in. above grade on a rocky mound, winter lows dipped to the upper teens. These seedlings are from our plants.
