Ferocactus pilosus

Big Red Cactus! The spines of this barrel are so thick and are such a vibrant red that large, mature specimens seen in the wild appear totally red. The actual body of the cactus is green but the spines are so impressive they blind your mind to the fleshy green body beneath and all you remember is red. In habitat you see many with solitary trunks but there are also numerous specimens that cluster from the base, producing multiple trunks with time. The grower that I have gotten the most recent batch from has water high in calcium. The grower irrigates with overhead sprinklers, so when the water dries a calcium film develops on the bodies of the plant making them have a milk spattered or grayish appearance however the plants are healthy, vigorous and robust and with time the calcium deposits will dissolve away. With rain water and time, (a few months) the plant's bodies will return to a dark glossy green, and the spines will become a rich red just as one would desire.
