Gymnocalycium gibbosum
Y12-11 — Zone 6b to 9— Southern Argentina
Gymnocalycium gibbosum has a long and interesting history, which Graham Charles enumerates well in his book "Gymnocalycium in Habitat and Culture". It is the most southerly species of Gymnocalycium and is said to grow in sandy to gravely alluvial soils, beneath shrubs and other vegetation. It has a small flattened-globose body that has a muddy green color that can gain more burgundy tones in brighter light. The body has 12 to 13 ribs and is variably armed with stout, horny spines that radiate out to protect the plant. The flowers can be pearly white to white blushing pink and occur near the shoulders of the 4" tall and 4"wide bodies. A hardy and unique cactus.
