Gymnocalycium schickendantzii ssp. delaetii
D30-15 — Zone 8b to 10— Northwestern Argentina
A clean looking barrel cactus from northwest Argentina that is tolerant of shade. It is native to dense upper elevation (1,500 ft.) Chaco forest, where summer only rainfall averages 24". Its green-blue body is accented with emerging, short, black spines that age to ash color and are set in fuzzy white areoles. The plant produces club-like purple buds on the outer rim of this 8" to 10" barrel, which develop into pinkish rose flowers. When full open the flowers remain almost tubular in shape because they do not flare open as broadly as other species. Very tolerant of moisture, shade and cold! In habitat it freezes every year, with lows often dropping to the upper teens during hard winters.
