Mammillaria gigantic is a solitary-growing species which reportedly can grow over 10" in diameter, which is large for a Mammillaria. The body has a depressed globe shape and has numerous pyramidal tubercles which are tipped in stout spines. Not to sound high-falutin' to the Mammillaria novice, but to inform the Mammillaria connoisseurs that this species has up to 12 radial spines and 4 to 6 central spines. The central spines vary in length from seedling to seedling ranging from 1/4" to 1" in length. The flowers are a yellowish green and occur in rings at about the upper third of the plant body. This species produces a cottony wool in the axils of the tubercles.
