Mammillaria melanocentra

Y12-09 — Zone 8b to 10Northeastern Mexico

This solitary species of Mammillaria has a flattened globe shape. The green body has large, angled tubercles with wooly axils in youth. Each tubercle is tipped with 7 to 9 needle-like spines that emerge black but age to gray and are tipped black. Pink flowers occur, usually in the spring, in a ring on the upper third of the plant body. The plant will grow outside happily in zone 8b, given excellent drainage and planted in partial sun. During the recent cold winters of 2010 and 2011, a plant in the landscape survived down into the teens with no damage.
