Mammillaria picta

Q02-82 — Zone 9 to 10Northeastern Mexico

Mammillaria picta A small bodied Mammillaria that is usually solitary as a young plant but can cluster with age. The plant tends to have a mounding pin cushion form. In shade the body tends to take on a rounded mounding form but in sunnier conditions the plant will be flatter and more compact. The plant has numerous fine bristle-like spines that emerge a reddish to blackish color but age to a dull to creamy white. This species tends to be one of the earliest blooming plants in my collection, producing small creamy white flowers very early in the spring. After blooming, red cylindrical fruits are produced, which can persist for several months, extending the seasons of interest for this plant.
