Nolina matapensis
Y02-05 — Zone 8a to 10— Sonora, Mexico
This Bear Grass originates from moderate elevations, in mountain woodlands of Sonora and Chihuahua, Mexico. It has 1/2 inch wide leaves at the base ,which gradually taper to a soft point at the tip. The leaves are light-green to acid-green in color and arch outward from 2 to 4ft in length. In the early stages of growth the plant resembles a spineless Dasylirion but with time will develop a trunk that is topped with a head of graceful leaves. The trunk that develops over time in notable for its fissured texture and dark color. A mature specimen is graceful and stately in form and would add a dignified aura to any southwestern garden or pool side venue. Special thanks to Mary Irish for the wonderful photos.
