Though they are great for their original purpose we have found many other uses for them over the years:

They are durable tough and last for years. They can't stand up to a car tire backing over them but they can take more abuse that most nursery trays could imagine. We are initially offering just the clean, used trays that we have on hand but if we find they are popular we will investigate offering new ones as well.

Versatile trays for the innovative gardener

For years we have been using these durable, deep trays in the nursery for a variety of uses. We originally used them to hold up the deep, quart pots that we grow some of our trees in but we don't grow as many trees as we used to so now we have an abundance of these sitting in storage. So we're selling them off, 2 trays for $16.00 s/h included or 6 trays for $25.00 s/h included. The dimensions are 15-3/4" x 15-3/4" x 5"deep.

Though they are great for their original purpose we have found many other uses for them over the years:

  • Use the trays as seedling incubators: when planting acorns or large seed that mice like to eat, we plant the seed in one tray and then place another tray upside down over the first as a cover. With a stone or brick weighing the top tray down or by clipping the trays lips together with close pins the combo effectively exclude rodents and other predators. Since the trays have a meshed bottom you can easily water the seedling without removing the top tray. The top tray also adds protection from sun and wind allowing the seed some additional humidity yet allowing air circulation and soil breathability. Once the seed are fully germinated the top tray is removed and the seedlings are allowed to develop.

  • Elevate plants off the ground: for slow-to-develop plants like oaks or palms we used to have a problem with them rooting into the ground. Now we simply take an empty tray and place it upside down on the ground, then place the tray with the plants on it and this keeps the seedlings off of the soil and keeps them from developing a root system in the ground.

  • Protect bulbs from gophers: in Hempstead we used to battle gophers on a continual basis. Gophers were forever eating Gladiolus, Alliums and other favorite plants. We found that by burying a tray into the ground up to its lip that we could successfully cultivate most species that gophers seemed to prefer. Though the top of the try was open and a gopher could easily slip over it into the tray, they never caught on to this. The great part was that the meshed, open bottoms allowed for plants roots to grow through and develop (sometimes gophers would eat the roots outside the trays but the bulbs inside were safe). Note: We do not guarantee this item to be effective in all gopher problems. We are just relaying our experience with the usage of this item.

  • Storage for bulbs and more: the trays also work great for storing dry bulbs, onions, potatoes, and other items. They also stack easily inside one another when not in use and don’t take up too much space in storage.

  • Great for sifting: the fine meshed bottoms are the great size making these a nifty sifting tool for gravels, potting soils, small bulbs in old soil and more.

  • These trays are so versatile that I am sure that they have other uses as well.
