Podocarpus chinensis
Y05-87 — Zone 8a to 10— China
Chinese Yew! In 1990, the late J. C. Ralston handed us a 2 in. seedling of this plant and asked that we test it for heat and cold tolerance. It has proven itself now for many years, being very heat tolerant, (provided adequate moisture) and we have had reports that it has taken temperatures down into the single digits for brief periods in the Pacific Northwest. This Chinese yew is a welcome alternate to the common Japanese yew. Its open growth form and columnar habit makes this distinctive specimen quite elegant.
