Puya sp. Muela del Diablo site

D30-39 — Zone 10 to 10Southern Bolivia

Dyckia like Puya! This Puya originates from Southern Bolivia where it grows on steep rocky hillsides in dry Chaco habitat. The leaves of this species are much thicker and rigid than most other species of Puya that we have encountered and the spines on the leaf margins are more pronounced. When we first saw the plant we thought it might be a Dyckia but after seeing the seed and seed pods we realized it is a Puya of some kind. 4 to 5 foot branching flowerspikes.

The Chaco is a predominately deciduous scrub-forest ecosystem in Northwestern Argentina and Bolivia that has a brief but intense rainy season from midsummer to fall with a brutishly dry winter and spring and best described as late season monsoon. The typical Chaco is a mix of heavily, thorny legumes and subtropical trees and shrubs intermixed with cacti, bromeliads and aromatic herbs.

Oops we misspelled Muela (Muerla) in the catalog. Muela transales to molar in Spanish. The r should not have been in there. Thank to David Schneider for pointing this out.
