Sabal minor - Savannah, Georgia

Y11-57 — Zone 7 to 10Georgia, USA

Sabal minor - Savannah, Georgia! Years ago we received seed of a Sabal minor from a location near Savannah, GA. The sender labeled them as Savannah Silver and indicated that the leaves from this population had a silver color or casting to them. I have never seen the plants in the wild so cannot testify to the leaf color. As seedlings, they had not shown much color other than green, but the more recent set of leaves are starting to show a bit more silver coloration than the average S. minor. Whether this plant can be given the distinction of being called a "silver leaf" form of S. minor only time and patience will tell.

Notes and observations about this plant

Survived in Hot Springs, AR by Charles Harper
Bought one of these last year. Planted it with three other Sabal minors. It survived a bad winter with 3 or 4 heavy snows in Hot Springs, AR. Cold down to 13-14F. Had a little burning on the leaves but is doing great now and pushing out new leaves. I have it and others on a drip system and I give them palm food every couple of months. I did not cover them during the winter. (Posted on 8/21/11)
