Sansevieria masoniana
Mason's Congo Sansevieria!
The thick, leathery, and mottled leaves of this Sansevieria, which often get to be 10" wide, and can reach heights of 30" or greater, never go unnoticed. The texture and form of this plant draws one's attention like those crazy web adds that feature toothless old men with funny faces. You just can't help but look. But unlike the disturbing adds online, looking at this plant is a pleasant experience. Due to the size of the leaves and the large underground rhizome often reaching the size of a grapefruit, this plant needs to planted in large broad containers to be happy. Too small a container will cause the plant to become top heavy, falling over and/or bursting the pot apart as the plant's root system expands. Though listed as a zone 10 plant, I have had a plant return as a root hardy perennial after being exposed to temperatures into the teens. So, in a dry, sheltered, shady location in zone 9, this should make a good garden plant as well as an unique houseplant elsewhere.
