Scutellaria ovata
Woodland skullcap!
Scutellaria ovata starts producing grey, felt-like leaves in late winter and early spring. By early summer it reaches a height of about 32 inches tall. From late spring to mid summer spikes of blue flowers are produced as long an moisture is sufficient. If moisture is not sufficient to sustain the plant or when it gets to be unbearably hot this plant tends to go dormant, retreating to swollen rhizomes that remain dormant until weather improves. We have seen it return and bloom occasionally during moist falls but reliably returns in spring if fall rains are not sufficient. This plant is found infrequently in the wild but makes a hardy long-lived perennial in the garden.
Best placed in shady areas of the garden where the blue and white flowers can shine. This plant spread by underground rhizomes developing into nice, manageable colonies.
