This cylindrical stemmed cactus branches from the base creating colonies with several to numerous stems that can be upright or decumbent. Numerous needle-like spines cover the cylindrical stems and are yellowish to brownish in color. The large, funnel to bell shaped flowers occur during the day and can be red, yellow or orange in color.
