Zamia floridana
Y05-45 — Zone 8b to 10— Florida
Florida coontie! The only cycad native to the mainland US! It is a native of Florida where it is referred to as 'Coontie'. It is used widely in Florida as a drought tolerant landscape accent. The Coontie was the first cycad planted at Peckerwood Garden, where it proliferated, setting enormous fruit-bearing cones with bountiful colorful seed.

Notes and observations about this plant
- Tough and resilient plants by Jessi Trudeau
- We have a number of Coonties planted throughout our 1/3 suburban lot in Austin. They all suffered the loss of their foliage in the harsh winter of 2011, but every one recovered fully and are even thriving through the hottest summer on record. Tough and resilient plants, Coonties. (Posted on 8/13/11)
