Dasylirion quadrangulatum

The most sculptural! In January, 1993, in northeastern Mexico, we pitched our tent among ancient tree-like sotols and awoke to find the entire mountain covered with ice. To our knowledge, 8000' is the highest this species has been found and seed collected. Smooth, toothless margins, and dark-green fiberglass-like leaves so abundant that you can't see their source characterize this species! We hope this selection will extend its cold-tolerance! The most recent monograph on Dasylirion has changed the name from Dasylirion longissimum to Dasylirion quadrangulatum. Gardens constantly change and so do plant names.

Notes and observations about this plant

Doing beautifully in costal South Carolina
have had this plant as a container plant in coastal sc for the past 7 years and it is doing beautifully. it is planted in a well drained pot and is placed in full sun...it has overwintered in the same container in the same location in my yard and has grown almost a foot of trunk in that time and is currently 6 ft tall by 8 ft wide. i do frequently water it and twice a year give it a slow release fertilizer (osmoco te) (Posted on 5/21/2013 by Barry Dennis).
